Though my work history has allowed me to gain valuable hands-on experience in a variety of fields the one industry that has remained a constant both in involvement and enjoyment has been marketing. My educational background in business began in Human Resources; however, after working for a few years in the field I realized that the work I was doing was stifling my creative spirit. Because I had always enjoyed creative hobbies I found a position in the very creative field of Inter Design where I gained practical knowledge of what it means to be a business owner and the marketing tasks I was in charge of included designing and developing print advertising, article writing, graphic design and the execution of marketing programs and promotion for the company.
After starting a family I began my career as an entrepreneur. I was the first of two momstown.ca licensees where I gained an unmatched amount of marketing experience. As the owner of this social media networking group for mothers I was able to achieve
- Organization and execution of marketing programs and promotions including marketing campaigns, special events, and promotions
- Event planning and on-site execution of large scale marketing events including post-program reconciliation including fiscal and strategic results
- Coordination of company participation in industry tradeshows
- Create content, maintain and update website and blog for the company
- Creation and maintenance of multiple social media accounts including company Facebook page, Meetup.com group, and Twitter account
- Create content and distribute monthly member e-newsletter
- Successfully establishing and nurturing media relationships
At the end of my license purchase with momstown.ca I was able to sell my business for a profit and return to my work in the interior design field. As a sole-proprietor I was again responsible for all marketing tasks for the company. In addition to expanding on the experience I gained through ownership of the momstown.ca chapter my involvement and understanding of the world of social media took on a whole new life. I became even more active on various channels of social media and added to my blogging background by starting a blog writing about how people in the design trade could utilize social media to their fullest potential. The social media research I completed gave me the knowledge to again expand my hands-on experience to include teaching at a college level.
As a college professor I developed an entire course on the topic of social media in the event planning industry. I taught weekly classes on the subject and received excellent feedback from both senior college administrators and students on my teaching and guidance abilities. Through my course I assisted more than one student with obtaining positions in the social media field and though I was invited to return to continue to teach the course my family was unfortunately relocated and it was not feasible to accept the position.
I have since continued my interior design business but have come to realize that though I have an extremely entrepreneurial spirit I believe that such an innovative soul would be best served by sharing it with a company who looks for employees to treat the company as if it were their own.
